Chubby Checker -This Months Oldies Legend

Chubby Checker 2005I was Born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941 in Spring Gully South Carolina, later moving to South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While in high school I worked after school as a chicken plucker at Fresh Farm Poultry Store and at the Produce Market, where I would often entertain customers with songs and jokes as I worked. My boss, Henry Colt, was so impressed that he and colleague Karl Mann arranged for a private recording session for American Bandstand. It was there that Barbara Mallery, the wife of Dick Clark of American Bandstand, asked me what my name was. I replied "well my friends call me Chubby. Since he had just completed a Fats Domino impression  she asked "as in Checker"?

That little play on words ( Chubby Checker / Fats Domino ) got an instant laugh and from then on I was known as "Chubby Checker" and my first hit was "The Twist" which went on to sweep the nation and and reached #1 one in 1960. Favorite Solid Gold Oldies Chubby Checker is still actively performing and has a full  concert schedule for 2013.
