              Edward Bouchet

Edward Bouchet, B.A 1874, Ph.D. 1876 was the first African American to graduate from Yale, as well as the first elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and the first African American to earn a Ph.D from a U.S. University. He was the sixth person in the Western Hemisphere to earn a doctorate in physics (the first in the United States).
